If you’ve never had a massage before, you might be wondering why other people invest the money to spend an hour lying on a table to have a stranger touch them. However, massage therapy provides a lot of physical and emotional benefits to those willing to spend the time and money — benefits like flushing out toxins, working out muscle strain, improving circulation, keeping tendons and ligaments flexible, and reducing emotional and physical stress.

The most classic style of massage is the Swedish massage. It uses techniques like stroking and gliding, kneading, rubbing, tapping or pounding, and vibration. Swedish massage uses gentle strokes over bonier areas of flesh and applies more pressure to areas with thicker muscle mass to create the most relaxing experience possible.

Core Chiropractic and Wellness has a blog going over other types of massage as well. Most massages are based on the techniques used in Swedish massage.

What To Expect

It is common in Swedish massage for your massage therapist to incorporate aromatherapy in the form of lotion or oil to help you relax more quickly. This also keeps the massage lighter and more enjoyable. The massage therapist may also put on soothing music to help you relax as well.

Your Swedish massage will include long, smooth strokes down your back; more intense techniques such as kneading, rolling, and lifting; rubbing in small circular motions, also called frictions or wrinkling, to loosen up essential back muscles; chopping, hacking, or tapping motions on thicker, fleshier parts of the body; and vibration, which involves movements to rock and shake the body.

For Your Personal Comfort

Your massage will typically last 60 to 90 minutes. If you’re new to massage, 60 minutes is recommended as 90 minutes may cause more muscle discomfort because your body isn’t used to being worked in that way.

For your own comfort, you may choose to keep your clothing on. If this is the case, it is recommended to wear older clothing as the lotions and oils used during the massage may stain. If you decide to undress, you will be provided with a towel so that you are never fully exposed at any point. The table you lie on will be padded for comfort and your massage therapist will only uncover areas that they are massaging.

As mentioned, your massage therapist will use lotions or oils to increase relaxation and to allow easy movement across your body during different techniques. If you have any skin sensitivities or allergies, make sure to let your massage therapist know so that they do not irritate your skin with the wrong type of lotion or oil.

Also, if the music bothers you, you may mention it to them so that they can turn it off. It’s important that you are as comfortable and relaxed as possible, regardless of the “standard” massage therapy environment.
